You Don’t Have to Get in Shape for CrossFit—That’s Our Job

So many people tell me they want to get in shape for CrossFit before they join. And I get it—it can be intimidating!

The videos online show athletes flipping tires, doing muscle-ups, and snatching barbells over their heads like it’s nothing. But here’s the truth: You don’t need to be in shape before you start. Getting you in shape for CrossFit is literally what CrossFit does best.

How getting in shape before I started held me back

I can speak confidently on this topic—not just as a coach, but as someone who’s been there. My first exposure to CrossFit was a Reebok ad showing professional CrossFit athletes doing box jumps so fast they collapsed to the ground afterward. I remember thinking, “That looks so cool, but I could never do that.”

Not long after, a CrossFit gym opened in my neighborhood. I’d walk past during classes and tell myself, “I need to get in shape first, then I’ll try.

Two years (and approximately a billion excuses) later, I finally took my first class—and was blown away by how different it was from what I’d imagined. There were people resting mid-workout, stepping up on a two-inch box instead of jumping on a 24-inch one, and cheering each other on the whole time.

I honestly felt kind of foolish for waiting so long to try!

You don’t need a “base level” of fitness to start

I promise, you don’t need to “train for CrossFit” before you do CrossFit. Every workout is scalable, which means we meet you exactly where you are. Can’t do a pull-up? You can do ring rows, bent over rows with light weights, or other more beginner-friendly versions. Can’t run (yet)? We’ll substitute rowing or biking. Struggling to lift heavy weights? You’ll start lighter and focus on form.

The goal isn’t to show up ready to crush a super-intense workout—it’s to build strength, endurance, and confidence one day at a time. And the coolest part? You’ll be surrounded by a supportive community that remembers their first day, too.

What it really means to get in shape for CrossFit

When people say they want to get in shape for CrossFit, what they usually mean is that they don’t want to be the slowest person in class. But honestly? No one cares how fast you move or how much weight you lift. Everyone is too busy doing their own workout (and cheering each other on when things get tough).

“Getting in shape” isn’t about six-pack abs or running a sub-seven-minute mile. It’s about showing up consistently, learning new skills, and doing a little more than you thought you could. And if you do that, the “in shape” part takes care of itself.

The hardest part is walking through the door

If you’ve been putting off trying CrossFit until you get in shape for CrossFit, let me save you some time and get you on the path to your goals more quickly: The best way to get in shape for it is to start. Our coaches will handle the rest.

We’ll teach you proper movement, help you progress safely, and remind you that everyone starts somewhere. You just have to take the first step.
