Do You Need to “Get Fit” Before Starting CrossFit?

I can’t even tell you how many times, upon telling someone I own a gym, the person replies, “I’ve always wanted to do CrossFit…but I need to get fit first.”

I’m not sure how or why the idea that one needs to prepare to join a gym became so widespread, but I have news. Thinking that you need to start working out before joining a gym is the fitness equivalent of cleaning the house before the cleaning company comes over.

Here are 4 reasons why you can and should start right now, no matter how out-of-shape you might perceive yourself to be.

Get Fit With Us, Not For Us

Here are just a few reasons why you don’t need to get fit to start CrossFit.

Our Programming is for Everyone

We are so proud of our diverse 26 fam, which includes athletes of all ages, races, athletic backgrounds, and body types.

Our gym fam includes 20-something athletes who’ve played competitive sports and love a push from the group, 70-something athletes who work out so they can wrangle their grandkids, and everything in between.

Despite their differences, all of our athletes have a few things in common:

  • Every single one of us was a beginner once.
  • Our goal is constant, steady improvement.
  • We all REALLY love having new friends at the gym.

No matter where you’re starting out, we’d love to have you with us!

We’ll Ease You In

In our nearly 10 years of business, we’ve introduced hundreds of St. Louisans to CrossFit through what we call an on-ramp.

The on-ramp consists of 5-6 one-on-one or small group sessions that are completed before new athletes transition into group training.

The first session begins with a mobility and flexibility assessment to help us safely modify your workouts from the very beginning and make a plan to help you correct any limitations.

Assessment aside, these on-ramp sessions are designed to teach you technique and form, to build up your stamina (you know, help you get fit), and to help you feel more confident about transitioning into group classes.

We Can Modify Any Workout to Suit You

Though our group classes follow the same programming each day, our coaches can modify every single workout.

In fact, we sometimes have classes in which every single athlete is doing a different version of the same workout!

Your coaches are there to keep you safe and to help you get the most out of each workout. This often means changing parts of the workout to help you:

  • hit a certain time goal
  • work on skill and technique
  • progress toward performance or aesthetic goals
  • work around pre-existing injuries
  • get stronger and faster

You won’t come out of on-ramp doing the exact same workout as athletes who’ve been doing this for 10 years, and that’s okay! These modifications will help you to become better, faster (as long as you put in the work).

You’ll Find Motivation Here

So you say you want to get fit. What’s been stopping you? Are you waiting to feel motivated?

The best way to find motivation is to take action. Even small steps, like scheduling an appointment to see the gym or booking your first intro session, help build motivation.

And once you get into the actual workouts…look out, world! We hear time and again from our most reluctant new clients how they cannot wait to get back to the gym, after just a couple of workouts.

Should this not be the case for you, no worries! Your coaches will provide encouragement and help you work through some of the blocks that have been holding you back. Coaches are good like that.

We believe in you, and we can’t wait for you to prove to yourself how strong you are!
